Fort Worth Water Gardens

Architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee designed this landmark, a 4.5-acre park with pools, fountains and waterfalls.

and younger. Parking $5. Every Wednesday is half-price day.

Visitors can see more than 4,000 animals, including those in one of the finest primate facilities in U.S. zoos. The newest intallation is Texas Wild!, devoted to the flora and fauna of the Lone Star State.

The Palace of Wax and Ripley's Believe It or Not!

The Palace of Wax houses more than 225 wax figures representing Hollywood stars, famous folks from the Old West, historical figures, storybook characters and biblical scenes. Ripley's Believe It or Not! displays an array of oddities, curiosities and illusions collected by Robert Ripley.

This 47-acre water park features a 1-million-gallon wave pool that creates 4-foot surf, six 600-foot-long water flumes, a six-story Kamikaze water slide, 62-foot-tall Geronimo, a river raft ride and the Black Hole, a tubular slide with strobe lights. A 2-acre section of the park is designated for small children.

Hours: Open at 10 a.m. daily, with closing hours varying according to the season. The park is open from early March through late October, weekends only in spring and fall.
One of the state's most popular attractions, Six Flags Over Texas has more than 2 million visitors each year. It features thrill rides, live entertainment shows and skill games.

State Fair of Texas

Dates: Sept. 28-Oct. 21, 2001.
Staged annually in late September through early October at Fair Park in Dallas, this is one of the largest state fairs in the United States. There are numerous exhibits, an extensive midway, live music, a livestock exposition, the annual Texas-Oklahoma football game in the Cotton Bowl and a major musical production in the State Fair Auditorium.
