T arrant County is a sophisticated cosmopolitan region located in the north central part of Texas. Fort Worth serves as the county seat to an estimated population of 1.4 million residents. Tarrant County is one of the fastest growing urban counties in the United States today and is made up of 41 incorporated cities. The total land area encompasses 864 square miles and includes 100,000 acres of pristine lakes. Throughout Tarrant County, the cities and towns have a unique Western flavor. Tarrant County's heritage lies directly in the Old West and much of the area's traditions can be traced to the era of the cowboy and cattle-drives that frequently passed through the county. Tarrant County is one of 254 counties in Texas that were originally set up by the State of Texas to serve as decentralized administrative divisions providing state services and collecting state taxes. Three of the fastest growing and desirable cities in the county are Flower Mound, Keller, and Southlake. Southlake has a strong and diverse economy, by 1990 six manufacturers in the community produced engines, concrete products, and food packaging. Because of this sturdy base, Southlake has become the third largest community in Tarrant County, after Fort Worth and Arlington. The population in Southlake is approximately 21,519 residents. The city enjoys a high median household income of $131,549 per year. The average Southlake home costs around $380,000 and is on a one-acre lot.
The Town of Flower Mound is a beautiful north central Texas town and is one of the top ten fastest-growing communities in the United States. Flower Mound's low tax rate, excellent school system, safe neighborhoods, and a quality of life hard to find in any community, make it one of the premier cities in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex to live and raise a family. The current population is estimated at 53,000 residents and the average home price is $183,960. Keller is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport complex and is close to the new Alliance Airport that was developed by Ross Perot, Jr. for local business interests. Most residents work outside of Keller, but many businesses, including commercial and industrial, are beginning to locate in the area. The median household income is $55,050 per year and the population is 27,354 residents. Tarrant County has changed vividly over the past few years. Once dependent on defense plants and its military base, Tarrant County's economy has been reinvented into one of the most healthy and diverse in the nation. It is spearheading the regional renaissance in business relocations and expansions, retail projects and new housing development. Once intimately tied to the oil industry and cattle ranches of west Texas, Tarrant County's businesses today reach around the world and the county's commercial and industrial airports are among the United States leading international gateways. The area is home to major corporations like Lockheed Martin, American Airlines, Bell Helicopter Textron, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, Pier 1 Imports and RadioShack. The median household income for the county as a whole is $46,179 a year. Housing options in Tarrant County are as diverse and unique as the cities and town that make up the region. There is everything from starter family homes, elegant estates, gated golf communities, trendy urban condominiums, and rural acreage retreats. Prices range from $60,000 to up in the millions.
The climate throughout the county is mild and pleasant. Temperatures range from an average low of 350 F in January to an average high of 960 in July. Rainfall averages a little more than thirty-two inches per year, and the growing season extends for 230 days. With a vivid history, a bustling economy, friendly communities and such an enviable climate, residents have much to celebrate. Annual events that are much anticipated include Arbor Days, Bedford Blues Festival, Chisom Trail, Grapefest, Mayfest, Pioneer Days, and the Scottish Festival. Also with such wonderful weather, the region's many parks and lakes can be enjoyed year round. They offer everything from public trails for horseback riding, hiking and roller-blading to lectures and guided tours of the area's natural sanctuaries. There are ten lakes, all or partly located in Tarrant Count, in which to enjoy abundant water sports like boating, skiing, and swimming. County residents also have access to numerous other lakes within bordering counties and camping is available at several state parks within the North Texas region. Major attractions in Tarrant County include the Botanical Gardens, Fort Forth Zoo, Fort Worth Stock Yards, Sundance Square, Fort Worth Water Gardens, Hurricane Harbor Water Park, Six Flags Over Texas. Year-round, Fort Worth offers a major-league selection of sporting events, including NASCAR and Indy racing at the Texas Motor Speedway, rodeo action at the Cowtown Coliseum, college sports at Texas Christian University, hockey thrills with the Fort Worth Brahmas and PGA tour excitement at the MasterCard Colonial Golf Tournament. Just a few minutes away, there's the beautiful Ballpark in Arlington, where the Texas Rangers take the field. And it's an easy drive to catch the Dallas Cowboys, Mavericks and Stars. School districts within Tarrant County enjoy outstanding reputations and provide high quality education for area students. Twenty public school districts are located wholly or partly in Tarrant County. Fort Worth's is the largest, followed by Arlington's. Many smaller districts are growing rapidly; some have recently built schools, and others are planning construction. The Fort Worth district, for example, recently passed a $398 million bond issue and plans to build 12 elementary schools in the next few years.
